The 6th International Microtonal Guitar Competition is organised by Prof. Dr. Tolgahan ÇoÄŸulu with the sponsorship of Sala Muzik.

Shipping cost and possible taxes will be paid by the winners. The prize is only given to the arranger or arrangers for the first category. The prize is given to the composer in the second category. One can send only one piece to each category. You can apply to both categories with one piece.

INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT THE FIRST CATEGORY “ARRANGEMENTS INCLUDING A MICROTONAL GUITAR”

The piece can be an arrangement of a microtonal tune that uses at least one Classical or Acoustic or Electric or Bass Microtonal Guitar (Fretless guitars are not included here). For example, it can be an arrangement of a makam tune or Renaissance/Baroque tune or any microtonal tune. Some 12TET melodies can also be converted into microtonal or just tunings.

You can use any instrument or voice combinations next to a microtonal guitar such as: Microtonal guitar duo, trio, quartet or microtonal guitar and voice, microtonal guitar, drum and bass, microtonal guitar and string quartet, 10 microtonal guitars (screen can be divided), microtonal guitar and electronics etc.

The arrangements that are sent to the jury must be unpublished and unpremiered. Please don't share any part of the arrangements through social media before the announcement of winners.

The participants give the copyright of their pieces to be published by the competition as a score or video release.

INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT THE SECOND CATEGORY “COMPOSITIONS FOR THE SOLO CLASSICAL MICROTONAL GUITAR”

Compositions will be made for solo classical microtonal guitar. Different guitar types such as acoustic, electric, bass guitar are not included in the competition. Compositions shall be made only for nylon stringed classical guitar.

The compositions that are sent to the jury must be unpublished and unpremiered. Please don't share any part of the compositions through social media before the announcement of winners.

Types of microtonal guitars that the compositions will be made for are as follows:

Adjustable classical microtonal guitars

Fixed-fretted classical microtonal guitars
-
Converting the standard classical guitar to microtonal guitar by adding additional frets
-
Converting the standard classical guitar to microtonal guitar by tuning its strings into microtones

Fretless guitar is not included in the competition. This is because fretless guitar’s timbre is different than the classical guitar. Above mentioned guitar types are all classical guitars besides being microtonal.

The participants give the copyright of their pieces to be published by the competition as a score or video release.

VIDEO-SOUND QUALITY​
​
Since the performance videos of the winning arrangements/compositions will be shared on YouTube, video quality should be minimum 720p HD and sound should be recorded by a professional microphone.
DEADLINE
​
Application deadline for the competition is 27th of May 2022. Please send your video, a photo showing your guitar’s fretboard, the score of your arrangement or composition and the recording of the microtonal music you take as a reference (1st category) to microtonalguitarist@gmail.com by 27th of May 2022. ​​
